The Rembrandt portrait is a particularly special piece of work. While it typically represents Bahri Genc’s signature style that uses broad brush strokes and unique colour to convey human expression, it also reflects Bahri’s deep personal connection to Rembrandt unleashing more depths of expression and feeling as well as taking another step closer to a more innovative portrait conceptual style.
During Bahri’s university years, Holland’s greatest painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a constant in the young artist’s life and he remains a vital influence and inspiration to this day. Throughout Bahri’s career he created several statues and sketches of the great artist, paying homage to his genius. Bahri saw a world of different stories, images and dreams within Rembrandt’s paintings including personal connections to Genc’s own father. This piece is the culmination of that devotion, showing its viewers the extent of Bahri’s feelings towards the grand Dutch master as well as reflecting the deep impressions left by Rembrandt’s own paintings.
